#Commentary of Elena Melnick on conflict between Poroshenko and Avakov

Events in Ukraine began to develop at an extraordinary pace. The conflict between Petro Poroshenko and the Head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs Arsen Avakov can be described with the words of the famous Ostap Bender: “The evening ceases to be languid”.

The reasons for such disturbances in Ukraine are different views of power that be on security issues in Ukraine. To be more precise, Petro Poroshenko wants to concentrate in his hands all arms of governance over law enforcement authorities. This is due to one reason – the Ukrainian president is afraid of a coup d’état, which may have been prepared by the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in case of his resignation.

By connecting an entire series of Poroshenko’s actions, the conclusion is that he simply wants to resign Avakov as he once forced Yatsenyuk to resign. But before that, having thought several moves ahead, the ‘chocolate’ oligarch decided to secure himself by taking the police into his own hands.

With the help of Poroshenko’s godfather of his child and, at the same time, the Attorney-General Yuri Lutsenko, the first steps in this direction were taken in the past year – a criminal case was opened against the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Recently, a search of the Vadim Trojan’s apartment, a protégé of Avakov, has been carried out. But it was a prelude, as a warning for insubordination.

In addition, there is a certain risk that an absolute control in some hands over the power structures in Ukraine can lead to the next “Maidan”. In the midst of such events, it is very difficult to predict anything, because everyone is acting under “by whatever means necessary” principle in this situation in order to achieve the objective set.
